It's a cliche: "don't care so much about getting the respect of your heroes." Contrary idea: your choice of heroes ~reflects your values; their respect ~reflects their values. Maybe their aggregated respect measure is usefully like a prediction market? (via chat with )

Also, the idealized hero vs. actual hero.
Maybe a hero was really driven by status or power. Doesn’t mean you can’t respect an idealized version who is driven by a mission.
Ex: Believing in an idealized LBJ who cared about civil rights vs real LBJ who was just playing politics.
