Design requires holistic, auteur-like thinking, which doesn’t fit well into incremental participation models of the open source world.

It’s true, but I feel design systems (as the term is typically used in current trends) are pretty close to the surface in terms of depth-of-design-thinking. I wonder how to build systems which support pushing deeper in OSS.

In terms of depth-of-design-thinking, there's now this trend of process-focused open source design (https://www.2dimensions.com/ ) and sharing components that speed up the process for other designers (https://www.humaaans.com/ ), instead of open sourcing the end design itself.

Thank you for sharing! These were both new to me. Both of these do seem to fit into natural designer workflows more effectively than traditional open source contribution models.
