What are the most beautiful video games ever made? Not just visually, but the overall experience?

All of my top picks have already been mentioned in this (excellent) thread, so I’ll add a few I don’t see:
- Papers, Please is unsettling in a way I find beautiful
- Thomas Was Alone brings geometric shapes to life
- Rollercoaster Tycoon gave me a beautiful connection to kinetics
But alas, no title has competed with Journey in emotional incandescence for me as an adult, except for a few moments in The Witness. When I was a kid, FF and other “epic” games often did, but now the same moves usually feel false or shallow. Wonder what’s going on there.

Re: FF, etc; I’ve wondered the same and figured it was just a matter of which game gave me an experience first. The memories of playing those games are now better than the games themselves.

I found that too, with Papers, Please. Haven't played Thomas Was Alone, I'll check it out. Tried RT briefly, I should play more extensively, so many people love it!
