This has been one of the biggest culture clashes for me since leaving Apple. The difference here is so striking. For the first couple years, I bristled at all the metrics and A/B-ing at other tech companies (and in e.g. academic HCI). Now I have a softer view (thread):https://twitter.com/jordwalke/status/1060787524488949760 …

Can you clarify a bit what "Territory" means in this context?

Good point. A/B testing isn’t the problem. The problems are: 1. Ignoring people’s mental states, and considering only what they *do*. (Behaviorism) 2. Thinking you can design some parameters such that all increases in their value constitute real improvements. (Utilitarianism)
-
The alternatives are: 1. Form and test theories about the reality of the situation and people’s experiences. (Explanation) 2. Expect to face unforeseen problems, try solutions, and use equal creativity in testing their quality. (Creative criticism)

Btw, mentioning Popper like that is basically a cheat code to make me read whatever you’ve written or linked to. Unfair. :)
