Lots of reflecting on my own classrooms. Early on I put on a big show like soccer red cards for cell phone use or putdowns, proto-fights. Too confrontational Shifted to a more informational approach: “-1 professionalism point for x” said to that kid only.

Kids still need communication about expectations, but it doesn’t need to be as the authority handing out red cards. Unlike a puppy, you can talk to human kids and have a dialogue.
