Process shot. I've been playing with interactive visualizations of the wide gamut color spaces available on newer screens (>= iPhone 7). It's amazing how many super punchy vivid colors are suddenly available, but I haven't seen them obviously used in screen design!pic.twitter.com/gWGlCpCf3X

Given the present trend toward ultra-saturated colors, I'm surprised more folks haven't tried designing "wide gamut first," with fallback variant designs for traditional sRGB displays. Feels like the early Retina days, except with way slower adoption.

Yeah, that's one way to think about it. Neon lights emit closer to pure spectrals; these wide gamut displays better approximate that. More on the theory here: http://www.huevaluechroma.com/002.php

Where is a good place to start learning about this? I want to point a designer there.

Colour management is pretty tricky to understand, too. How many designers even specify a colour space for colours? It will come in time though.

It’s mostly because our tools to design for wide gamut suck. Many of the design tools used today aren’t even colour managed.

we use it for drawing in our whiteboard app (with a sRGB fallback setting for those who don’t like. App: Inko). It’s really obvious. We also wanted it in the app icon itself, and although iOS APIs support it, Springboard fails to display it correctly.

All the while I'm passing RGB colors through CMYK round-trip to mute them 🙃
