Going deeper into the economic note, there is a strong sense that the reason non-residents and non-citizens are getting mixed up is because the authors of this report believe that citizens have more of a right to own property than non-citizens, even those who are resident here.

Hey
@ASB, resident non-citizens who buy houses so they can live somewhere are not the same as the "overseas investors" that you're worried about. Conflating them is not just misleading, but kinda dangerous eh?এই থ্রেডটি দেখান

They’re just being real. Of course it’s not all non citizens but it’s a probably a hell of a lot of them rather than none ah? The non citizen I know owns 43 houses. Overseas invester? Yer
-
There's a huge difference between anecdote and data. The problem with the data is that if they're going to use it to try and advocate for some truth, they should probably use the data correctly.
-
Trying to find actual facts on numbers of overseas investors owning homes in NZ is hard work. Surely we have to take in account people who are buying houses here who only live here in part to buy more houses?
-
There's still a big gap between the people you're interested in and the many other people (non-citizens) who are buying houses with the intention of living here, in those houses, so that they don't get rained on as much.
-
I think the sense that we are getting from all the collected data at this point is that the anecdotal evidence is outpacing the actual statistics. Are the statistics correct? No one really knows, but that shouldn't make the anecdotes stronger.

Who on earth did they get to analyse the data? This is shoddy as hell. I would expect more from one of our largest news sources, even if it is the Herald.
-
ASB did the analysis, published an economic note/report, and then gave it to all the media agencies, who are basically just quoting what it says in the report. So pretty sure the fault lies with ASB's economists.
-
Sigh. Still not sure why the distinction between non-residents and non-citizens is so important, unless ASB is trying to make a political point for some reason. Concerning either way.
-
ASB conflated them. The distinction matters because there are people who live in this country who are non-citizens, but they are definitely residents and shouldn't be lumped into "foreign investor"
-
Fair point. This reflects why I need to read more. Thanks for the help. :-)
-
Also important because Labour said that this evidence vindicates their overseas investor ban. The evidence is shaky, and they're getting caught up again in discriminating against people who are living in this country.
-
Is your view that the foreign buyer ban is a mistake full stop, or just that the government is going about it in a flawed and discriminatory way?
-
My personal belief is both. I think that if we're honest about it, there are far more effective options for cooling the housing market. Capital gains tax would be one.

FFS My mum's a non citizen, she's a permanent resident of NZ and has been since 1964. Such a huge difference.
-
Well, good to know that ASB thinks that if she owns a house, she might as well be a "foreign investor" that is pricing good hard working kiwis out of their own country

-
A foreign investor who protested against the Springboks, marched for Homosexual Law Reform, brought up 3 citizens on her own, and still volunteers for the Red Cross at 74. Get stuffed ASB

Also a difference with "corporate entities" - which is bundled into this so-called 1-in-5 sales.
-
They even say in the report that most corporate entities are likely to be NZ owned... But include them in their range estimate anyway.
-
I know - the language is so whack. Only 79% of NZers capturing houses because 10% are sold to "corporate entities"? As if a company isn't made of people (let alone NZers!)...
