Maybe I shouldn't tweet about this, but I heard from multiple colleagues and trainees (both male and female) about how upset they were about today's Scudder oration at #ACSCC18 and how they felt that they couldn't speak up about it in public. 1/x

I wasn't there, so I've only gotten the second hand reports and a few screenshots. What I've heard, however, reflects a casual acceptance of ingrained social norms that can't be accepted in the modern era, mostly around gender roles and nurse/physician interactions. 2/x

My trainees felt this was especially striking in a speech about professionalism. The message they got from seeing a standing ovation afterwards is that this is both accepted and encouraged by the profession. 3/x

Again, I wasn't there but I believe my residents when they talk about how uncomfortable, frustrated, and angry the speech made them. 4/x

Since they don't feel free to speak up, I feel that I have to speak up for them. "The standard you walk past is the standard you accept" - Lieutenant General David Lindsay Morrison https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/David_Morrison … 5/x

In an era where diversity, inclusion, and acceptance are recognized as being critical to the success of our profession and the care of our patients, we must reach towards a higher standard. Hopefully we can all use this as a teachable moment. 6/6

I'm not attending the meeting, but please encourage all who were uncomfortable to comment in their program evals and consider emailing the education / program committee

This seems like a good approach. I wasn’t at the talk and have left the meeting now, but using the available processes for feedback as at least one tool makes sense.

Thanks for bringing this up. Some of us have been debating this in a private forum and people are interpreting this talk from a variety of perspectives. I'm glad we are talking about it. @heenastat @scrubbedin @CVelopulos @pferrada1 @heatherevansmd @MichaelaWst

I think there have been a lot of private discussions. I struggled with whether to post anything, and what tone to strike. In the end, I felt that someone had to say something publicly, if nothing else to validate what my residents are feeling.
