So is the singing accompanied by string instruments we hear allowed under the Sharia? I'm showing ignorance I know. Are they prayers which are allowed?

It depends on who you ask, but those who follow the ruling that music isn't allowed are generally okay with singing (and sometimes percussion) but no string instruments. prayers are allowed since they don't involve any type of music :)
