Because the gasoline filler is on the drivers side to make it easier to fill up at the gas station, and the exhaust pipe is always on the opposite side for safety reasons.
Why are most car exhausts on the back right side of the vehicle in America? Wouldn’t it make more sense for fumes to be dispersed into oncoming traffic instead of pedestrian traffic?

I have an old 88 BMW - my filler is on the passenger side and exhaust is on the left. Makes sense.

I...think so it doesn’t go up into the driver’s space, possibly impairing them and/or causing an accident.
