I wouldn't say *no* signs the slope is starting to peter out...
It is not. More cases are being reported than each day before, as well as deaths.

Yes but the rate of increase, i.e. the slope, is visibly decreasing. But you're also assuming that the US data is accurate. With hampered testing for weeks I suspect the only way you'll really know is to compare death rates across the whole population and then take a punt.
