A man was arrested in NYC early Tuesday for stealing ~$90 worth of soap & other cleaning products. The man was charged w/ petit larceny & criminal possession of stolen property. I had to look it up because I also thought the same. It is indeed petit larceny. Defined as the theft of property or services valued at less than $200, or the theft of property valued at less than $5 when taken directly from the person of another.

It was a joke: Petty/petit v biggy. But... Petit (French) appears to be common usage in US, not so in UK (in a past life I was a court reporter).
