The poor word choice here never ceases to astound me. Did he say n*gger? No. But how many other ways could he have made the same point w/o using a word that sounds just like it? The word is not even derived from the racial slur. Completely different etymology. This is an incredibly misleading post.

Then you’d feel comfortable walking into, say, the nearest black barbershop, and just dropping the word in casual conversation?

Rule #1 in speech-giving: know the audience. If your audience will likely misunderstand a word, use a clearer one. Yes, pedantry is my super-power.
No one said it did, Andrew. However, Sanders was certainly able to communicate the same sentiment without using that word. Sanders' lack of self-awareness is astonishing. Not a positive trait in someone who wants to lead the free world.
