Dear @AmericanAir,
After arriving back to LA from Indonesia, I was $275 EQDs under (yet 25K miles over) from maintaining status. You asked me to pay $1875 (?!) to keep status, so instead I booked a $400 rt ticket to Mexico for 24 hrs. Here’s how my fucking night went...

I don’t want to sound rude, but if you don’t fly a lot you wouldn’t understand the benefits of his top tier status with American. It really does have a ton of benefits and perks when you travel a lot. It is actually worth quite a lot, which is why he would do this.

I don't mean to be rude but I do fly quite a bit. I used to chase status then I realized there were literally little too no benefit to chasing it. You make stupid decisions like going to Mexico to achieve it rather than actually loving your life and enjoying it.

Ok, fair enough. To me there are some benefits that are really good and valuable, like the international upgrades and access to the best lounges (saves a ton on food bills alone). But to each their own.

Or just get an amex Platinum card and the same thing.

Definitely not the same thing. Amex Platinum doesn’t get you any upgrades, any faster check-ins, any same day changes or better customer service lines. Not all airports/terminals have the Amex lounges either. (Amex lounges are great tho!)

The amount of money I saved this last year on just same day flight changes was thousands... and yes, the $ saved on meals, particularly in flagship lounges, was also thousands.
