The bar manager was now threatening me. He grabbed me and brought me to an ATM outside. I refused to take out cash. So he called the police, of which I welcomed. Surely the Mexican police would understand the situation

I live in Kansas City MO, we have Nigerian, Mexican, Iraqi, white, and black Americans all on the same block and regularly BBQ and gather together. Seems like an unnecessary aside in a story from another country (that's far too common) that would likely never happen in the US
