You seem like a fine guy, but this is all on you. Terrible plan... for what? Airline status? Hahaha. This is in no way on American Airlines. To the contrary, what a great story American Airlines gave you. I feel like you should be thanking them!
My frustrations with American are with their ever-changing status rules. I was short by $275... let me pay the $275 (like they used to allow) and none of this would have happened 
Telling me they wanted $1875 made no sense at all!
Ok fair but as long as we're clear you ended up on Mexican prison because of your choices and not because of AA changing status rules... In the end, you knew the deal before you went. I can't believe I'm defending an airline.
This post was written in jest... but yes, they were my choices. Except the whole getting robbed and thrown in jail part. Didn’t choose that.
I did a one day R/T JFK -> BOS to get a $197 deficit cleared to main my status as well... Just got on the plane, got off, checked back in and returned home. I admitted this to some others on my flight and turned out they were doing mileage runs as well. Moral? Stay close to home.

And miss that experience? And that crush? No way....AA did you a FAVOR. lol
But now you have the story of a lifetime!
So just live with the lower status. AA isn’t extorting you. They’re under no obligation to allow you buy your way to a higher status at any price. I had the same problem this year. I’m not gonna spend any more time in a plane seat than I absolutely have to.
$1875 to cover a $275 shortfall? That's a worse con than the one Urban Bar ran on you in Cabo.
