I wish the police force of Charlottesville did something as we were getting rocks, bottles, spears, & bear mace thrown at us by actual fascists, including Proud Boys. As a journalist, I wore protective gear that might have saved my life that day. We assume the risk.

Assume the risk means that the perpetrators shouldn’t be held accountable for battery and general lawlessness? Yikes. Sounds like victim blaming.
Andy made a choice not to wear protective gear. Not condoning the violence, but if you want to get on the front lines, you better bring the right gear.
“Assuming the risk” is being on the front line in a foreign country. Of course there are risks for journalists in America, but there are also consequences for violent criminals and a general expectation that police won’t blatantly ignore violent public gatherings
