Why can’t we realize that it is both a hate crime and mental illness? As if people who carry that kind of hatred aren’t clearly suffering from mental illness?
Being a white supremacist/racist doesn’t mean you are mentally ill. I wish we could classify them as such, and if so it would be considered an epidemic. But, the reality is these are normal people who are blinded by propaganda and are taught to hate
It’s true that racism per se is not a recognized diagnosis (eg, in the DSM), but I am very certain that a person who is truly racist would meet criteria for diagnosis if properly evaluated. Killing somebody because they are listening to music, for example, is suggestive of MI.
Most people with mental illness are not violent. At all. They are the recipients of violence.
