I love finding all those testimonials scattered about the Internet that are like "some bad people came to my store so I shot them up good, but then the police came and made me scared." The emphasis on escalation leads to worse outcomes all around.

I was reminded of this just now by today's NPR interview with Jennifer Eberhardt, where she noted that rethinking police policies - creating a perimeter around fleeing suspects instead of chasing them down and / or shooting them - actually led to fewer police injuries, too.
