Christopher Columbus (Cristoforo Colombo) was an asshole who raped and trafficked little girls and fed indigenous babies to his dogs. He was not the first person to travel across the Atlantic. He made slaves out of Natives and went on to wipe out 70-100 million indigenous people.
He forced indigenous people to work in gold mines until they died from exhaustion. The slaves who did not meet their quota would have their hands cut off and forced to wear them around their neck - which led many indigenous people to commit suicide.
One of Columbus’ men, Bartolome De Las Casas, saw so many atrocities he left to became a priest, “Such inhumanities & barbarisms were committed in my sight as no age can parallel. My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature that now I tremble as I write.”
Columbus commanded his people to cut off the legs of children who ran away from him. His men tested the sharpness of their swords by seeing if they could cut an indigenous person in half with one sweep. He was the father of the slave trade.
