Any developer environment that is centered around alcohol (not just having drinks as one option of many) is inherently an unsafe space for women. Considering that dev spaces are almost always majority male anyway, adding alcohol to that makes me extremely uncomfortable.

In New Zealand, many companies will have this Kiwi Friday afternoon where people drink beers and social. I join sometimes. You don’t have to attend if you feel uncomfortable. But banning something just because of personal feeling doesn’t sound right. Respect isn’t unidirectional.

You can always meet with your coworkers for drinks while not on company time. Company teambuilding time should be open and welcoming to all employees, and employees who don't drink/are uncomfortable around alcohol shouldn't be at a networking disadvantage.

Honestly, as someone with dietary restrictions, if I had a coworker who was uncomfortable around meat I'd be perfectly fine not eating meat around them.

Eventually you end up with people covering their individuality because it is an issue for others, and things go downhill. Environment does not excuse horrible behavior, and bad behaviour is the problem, not a beer, and not visible ankles.

lol my dude, easy to say when you don't notice a stark increase in harrassment around drunk folks. Sorry your individuality is threatened by *checks notes* food intolerances and a lack of alcohol around coworkers? Let folks feel safe at networking events.

You drunk right now? What else would explain your personal attack to what is a serious concern?

This isn't a personal attack. The fact that you think it is says a lot about you. You've been throwing strawmen and not listening. No, I don't think a loss to one's individuality at a work-centered event is a serious concern.

This isn't an academic discussion for me. I ran events for many years with many people and had networking events of all kinds in the mix. I lost this when I apologized for something inappropriate said by a coworker at a keynote, who was then hired by The Linux Foundation.

This is the first thing that I can find, which is that the only promotion you seemed to do for this event was one post that violates @Reddit's policies. You somehow managed to only get 4 karma, which is almost impressive - you must have really held back the desire to work!pic.twitter.com/paKTGr0FNU
