y'all I keep seeing pictures and interpretations of gymnasium groups of <100 Iowans and what these results mean for the primary. These tell us basically nothing about the IOWA results tonight and they CERTAINLY don't tell us anything about the primary as a whole.

There's been some discussion around the demos of Iowa and how they are not representative of the US broadly (namely, Iowa is whitey white white) which is IMO enough reason to change the ordering of primaries, but I wonder if the caucus process itself is making this even worse.

I wonder how the nature of the caucus process itself magnifies the inequalities and general unrepresentativeness of Iowa. If these biases are exacerbated, what is the argument for keeping a caucus process instead of a private ballot besides just inertia?

Spoke to a few people over the past few days who didn't realize the Iowa caucuses (for dems) work differently than the voting process people may be used to. This video is a pretty helpful explainer!

Staying in academia is a great career choice *if that's what you want to pursue*. By framing anything that's not an academic path as a failure post-PhD, a lot of departments are setting their students up to not recognize the versatility of the training we get as PhD students.

I'm biased since I'm going into an industry position after PhD, but I strongly believe that reducing this stigma w/i PhD programs will go a long way to making students happier and healthier. Seen too many students who stay in academia *because* leaving has been framed a failure.

Hatred, climate change, global warfare, racism, and now, a sham trial. I get it. You’re exhausted. We’re all exhausted. What’s the point? WE are the point. WE deserve to thrive, not just survive. And we don’t have to take whatever the powerful give us. We have our own power.

I understand it's easier to discuss disease movements and containment with a detached lens. But all too often taking this view carries the conversation into dehumanization territory. People become pathogen. Something to be protected from rather than to protect.

The impact of the quarantine on Wuhan's citizenry has been conspicuously absent from reporting I've seen. Lots of talk about the quarantine as a necessary precaution to contain an outbreak, but what of the physical and mental toll of quarantine on a population of *11 million*?

This along with the obvious accessibility concerns (e.g., old age, disability/work status, etc. making it difficult to make it to caucus site and *STAY THERE FOR HOURS ON A WEEKDAY*) plus the encouragement of aggressive tactics by supporters makes it such an outdated system

"Hi I am in a domestic situation in which I can't tell my partner who I'm voting for but yes of course I will go to the high school gym to stand in a corner for three hours and trust that no one around me will tell my partner who I'm supporting"

This (the situation, not the person tweeting) highlights how silly it is that Iowa still has caucuses. This woman literally has to go to a public space and stand in support of her candidate in full-on public view of everyone. Then be resistant to groups calling on her to switch.

It’s exhausting to see a refusal to tolerate bigotry framed as a demand for moral purity or an unwillingness to compromise or work with people who have different points of view. Bigotry is not a perspective that deserves engagement beyond condemnation.
