A George Steiner quote: "It seems to me doubtful whether the human animal will manage to survive if it does not learn to do without frontiers and passports, if it cannot grasp that we are all guests of each other, as we are of this scarred and poisoned earth."

Not sure I agree with this argument, which is essentially that China has too many levels of local government to respond well to crises. To me seems like a more general issue of accountability rather than a scale problem.

Also, once the good guys win they celebrate by throwing up arbitrary trade barriers and rewarding their cronies with monopolies? Whose values are these exactly?

Watched Frozen for the first time last night with my niece. Is it just me or is the whole premise of the film that the delicate emotional balance of the elite must not be disturbed lest all of society suffer dire consequences?

Read this incisive piece by ⁦⁩ who sees thru the absurdity of the grand gestures of the Chinese state.”The government’s inability to formulate a measured response will turn this outbreak into a direct successor of the SARS epidemic.”

While discussing with my students the importance of "national humiliation" (国耻) for the legitimacy narrative of the Chinese Communist Party, reflected on how that same discourse is present, for example, in Poland and in Russia. It serves much the same role as it does in China.

January is the major political conference season (the two annual meetings) when authorities tend to pull out all stops to maintain stability. The major conferences in Wuhan this year lasted from January 7 to January 17, 2020.

Makes me feel better that Mark Morris had the same underwhelmed reaction to Richard Powers' "The Overstory" that I did. I thought it was going to be a novel in which the trees were the characters, instead the characters just obsess about trees.
