TIL that Redpoint Ventures (early stage tech) and Versant Ventures (life sciences) were formed by splitting out of IVP (late stage tech) in 1999. Who knew??
All three have thrived.

There was also a third firm in the mix, Brentwood, where some of the tech-focused GPs split off to co-found
@redpointvc. Super fascinating history.@geoff_yang has a treasure trove of good stories from that period! -
Another fun fact: IVP and Redpoint are literally right across the hall from each other in Menlo Park!

My fav is that Bessemer is one of the oldest, named after the chap who invented the “Bessemer process” for large scale steel production, which led to the amassing of one of the largest fortunes in history: Andrew Carnegie of Carnegie Steel fame.
