"master"/"slave"/"killer" are banned now? I mean it's f*ed up humans where ever treated that way, but does that mean the words shouldn't ever been used for things ever?

I think we can use better words, because in the case of a killer app, nothing is being killed. In the case of a blacklist, the color black is not involved as a concept, except for its supposed association with the idea of rejection.

Not only is this the right thing to do, it also makes more sense. Why is a "killer app" famous and necessary for the growth of the underlying technology, what is it "killing"? Nothing, it's just an app everyone loves. And "blacklist" is often confusing, denylist is explicit, etc.

Metaphors are powerful devices, they make language fun and sometimes even easier to understand. If we want to have a serious debate about this, then I suggest we look at the etymology of each expression and see whether it indeed is ill-intentioned.

intent is far less important to me than outcome. word choice has subtext. if that subtext causes poor outcomes, we should scrap it no matter what someone intended.

Let's not change that
and think about stuff that's a lot more important. These terms aren't racist and they weren't meant to be racist. I generally liked your tweets but this, this is crazy. -
If you agree that the naming of these things isn't that Important, why not change 'em, and then we can all move on to more important stuff?

Except for the last one, I find the connection to patriarchy/racism very weak really. Killer is mostly about competition to me, also killing is scary and makes for attention-grabbing news. And the colours have a deeper meaning in the European culture. See funerals and weddings.

these are emotionally charged words with loaded context that we can easily switch out for more neutral terminology. why overburden language with other avoidable connotations?

You’re right. Human progress is a terrible thing. We should stop trying to be better.
