My path to infosec: Learned to crack shareware cause I was bored at work. Read a book on UNIX, saved up and bought a computer, installed Slackware... got hired off the street when someone overheard me say “Linux”, the job was “learn to hack.”

So, yeah, when ppl ask me how to get involved in infosec I have no idea. Learn Linux on a 2.2 kernel and walk down the street talking about it during the first dot com boom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You make me feel old. My first Linux was 0.98pl5, and I had a Xenix installation before.

Computers cost money. Money has never been a thing I’ve had. It took me months of working full time to save for my first computer… which I got just to use UNIX cause I liked the book I’d read.

Yup, I was in a very privileged situation. My father worked on semiconductor design in the east. His institute was the first one to use HDLs instead of pen and paper in the whole eastern bloc, on VAX machines imported circumventing the embargo.
