Hmmm. I am facing a similar problem, just with ümläüts. And I don't speak any French...
I was just saying I moved the Cmd key to make some room for AltGr: • right Alt becomes AltGr • left Cmd becomes Alt • butterfly becomes Cmd • fn+butterfly becomes Menu.
Such keyboards work better with “compact” layouts though. I’m pleased with mine, I might make a German variant in the next few days if that’s what you’re looking for. https://github.com/fabi1cazenave/qwerty-lafayette/tree/master/layout.dev …
I definitely am!
Neat. I’ll push something on Sunday then.
I'm beginning to wonder if there might be a more universal solution. Like a "combining" modifier. Press "Combine-' A"for á. 'Combine-" e' for ë. Et cetera.
Yes, that’s exactly the idea behind this keyboard layout: using a dead key for all special characters + an AltGr key for all symbols.
However, you might be pleased with the Compose key: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compose_key … — requires an additional key stroke, but truly universal. Works natively on Linux (and OSX I believe?), requires a 3rd-part app on Windows:https://github.com/samhocevar/wincompose …
