Totally makes up for unencrypted communication and default passwords that cannot be changed because they're hardcoded into the central control software. :)
Also, I'm totally lying: it's a safety system, which just happens to stop security issues.
My dad told me (back in 80s) they were allowed like one invalid display in a million, and likely it's not gotten worse from there. Layouting the cycles for larger crossings was done manually (at that vendor) b/c better optimization.
He'd go into a full-out rant for each unneeded wait at badly optimized crossings by $other_vendor who just skipped the human / optimization part so they could win bids by low price. I can still pretty much walk over crossings w/o looking
