But has no protections for what happens when someone doesn’t respect it. I was groped at a CCCB event, and while they handled it well, there was no CoC, just my trusted word.

So you say that their process to deal with sexual harrasment works and that's why they need to replace it with a different process (CoC + enforcement)? Does not compute.

Oh and? The guy had done it before with no consequences. The fact that he was even at that party shows how well it works :/

And surely that's going to be better by adding a rabid moral police? How do you prevent a CoC committee from becoming a proxy for people's personal vendettas? How do you prevent it from poisoning the discourse for fear of “offending” people?

You should be asking: What can we do to make sure everyone feels safe? If you think the answer is something other than a CoC, then by all means propose it!

If you are so afraid of the world that you get panic when entering a conference that doesn't have a dedicated moral police + CoC, perhaps you should seek councelling. Congress has always provided ways to deal with creeps by asking the Engel, no CoC police needed.

CoCs are great clauses that signal to everyone- here are baseline ways to engage with people, and here’s who to go to when that’s broken. The problem here is why does a CoC bother you so much? Why does the idea of protections for marginalized ppl make you so damn uncomfortable?

And to me, a CoC signalises “don't you dare disagree with us or we will immediately throw you out and ban you from all associated projects.” I want to discuss ideas freely, not be subject to a thought and morale police.

The fact that you can't tell the difference between debate and abusive behaviour makes me sad.

I can tell the difference from my perspective. However, other people have different trigger levels and a CoC processes forces me to adjust all my arguments to be okay with even the most trigger happy people, which is not something I am interested in.

Well, looking at common CoCs, I wonder what kind of ideas that might be.

Well, for example, there was this stellar example of “defending inclusiveness” from the Go CoC team:https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/golang-dev/pOvceAZwLHY …

"I owe nobody respect" is really the money quote there. Quite telling.

How nice of you to find a quote that allows you to dismiss this whole thing.

It pretty much captures the spirit of what's going on there. Same as Trump running on the non-PC, free speech ticket, and then forbidding "evidence-based" in science grant requests.
