Not sure what the best way to run the ESP32 off a 18650 cell is. LDO, and accept <3.3V? Or step-up converter?

a switching voltage converter would be the best, but also most complicated solution.

Of course I'd need a switching converter that also steps up at the same time. Such beasts exist, but not with the power I need...

powergating the sensor might be essential to long run time. And do not bother to do raw UDP instead of MQTT, it is not worth the hassle.

I figured that much, there's a FET designated for that purpose already. And: that wouldn't even occur to me.

Also use a super low drop LDO... Super low... Every mV kills some mW 😁

Also, that would get rid of the 3.3k resistor between VCC and GND in the ESP32 Core design. That thing alone kills the battery in a month.

the esp32 support 2,3 - 3.6 i would give it a shot running on one cell. How long do you need it to run?

Works great, let it go to sleep controlled when voltage drops below 2.9V to save the cell. 4*24Byte per Hour for ~1 Year

Get a "Lithium Batterie Saft LS14500/AA" with 3,6V. No need for any regulator
