I wrote this essay for @outsidemagazine about my messy history with running, which began weeks after my parents lost our house to bankruptcy.https://www.outsideonline.com/2398286/i-kinda-hate-running …

I wrote this for @alexheard (thanks, Alex!) back in May, which isn’t that long ago. But lately I’ve been on the camps beat 24/7. So for those of you who didn’t realize it, I *do* sometimes write about other things.

Thanks, Emily! For true excellence, I needed to get some ham in there. But I was unable to pull it off.

Great stuff, Andrea! I smoked for 55 years, quit, started running for the first time (I had played basketball and racquetball but had never jogged.) In the next couple years, I ran 22 5-Ks (slowly, in intervals). I finally learned to stop apologizing for being slow.

excellent piece. I started running seriously after chemo the first time in 92. i was in my 30's and used to get out on the mean streets of santa monica every morning at 6:30 run along the beach and out to the end of the pier and back. it was my way of dealing w/ it all.
