too often we use these words usuriously. first we loan them tremendous sums of efficacy, competence, tidiness, plenitude, sovereignty & savvy (“neoliberalism is everywhere”); then we promptly borrow back all that systematicity and rigor AS IF IT EXISTED IN THE WORLD TO BEGIN WITH

that doesn’t mean these oppressions aren’t real. it means that, bc they are real, they only rarely achieve the systematicity we cede to them in order to make our analyses clean and pretty.

power is weak, mostly. that is how it works. it is at best loosely patterned, stretchy, and piecemeal. it operates as much through negligence, leakage, and inefficiency as it does through ordering and targeting.
