"As I returned to the shore after my most recent ocean swim, I began to think about how the risks faced by writers and artists seem to parallel the risks of the ocean. The act of creating prose, poetry, or other forms of art can sometimes feel fraught with danger."

I will talk nine kinds of shit about Catholicism and the Church but there's something about the energy of "we've decided this skull belonged to somebody we're like 90% sure existed and we're building it a golden exo suit" that tickles something deep in me

It's almost always when I've been working on it late into the evening and I'm tired and I just want to be done with the thing. Which is understandable. But it I really need to wedge space in to let a thing sit before sending it out into the universe.

Sometimes I finish a thing (like a blog post) and I'm so excited to have finished the thing that I hit publish before giving myself time to sit back and proof it. I always regret those times.

I really hope you all think about the bookstores where you've enjoyed hanging out, or discovered your brand new favorite author. Now that the holiday season is over, indie shops really need your support. Order books from their websites, get gift cards, pre-order upcoming reads.
