Have you ever wondered why dogs tilt their heads? We are happy to share our insights on this popular, yet unstudied, behaviour! 🐶🐶🐶 A thread 1/4 #dogscience #dogsoftwitter #geniusdogchallengehttps://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10071-021-01571-8 …

Upon hearing the owners’ request for a familiar toy, gifted dogs (those with an established vocabulary of toys) tilted their heads significantly more than typical dogspic.twitter.com/FAcebwSLwj

We suggest that the difference in the dogs’ behaviour might be related to hearing meaningful words (for the gifted dogs) and could be a sign of increased attention 🧸🐕🧎‍♂️

Head-tilts could be related to making a cross-modal match in the dogs’ memory (e.g. name to a visual image) upon hearing the name of a toypic.twitter.com/cxwacWpUta

Love it! Loki does this when he hears a word he recognises or if we’re directly talking to him, and it looks like he’s really trying to understand even if he can’t. It’s usually accompanied by pricked ears, and eye contact to show he’s actively listening as well.

It's curious how other than videos on TikTok or YouTube we couldn't find any real answer. We immediately noticed that our gifted dogs did it almost every time the owners were mentioning the toys so, we got back and watched all the videos from the tests 1/2
