Our theme issue is out: If you are interested in compositionality from formal, computational, or neurophysiological/neurobiological perspectives with a mechanistic bent, eat your heart out! It was an honour to edit this together with the inimitable Giosuè Baggio .

I’m alive and who I am because of my mother and grandmother’s determination and sacrifice, and because of immigration. Support @wrcomission 16/16

Ok, something funny: Notice the uncanny similarity in homemade bowl haircuts between my mom and me, separated by 45 years and two continents. 15/16

They defied both their families to be together and marry. To this day, after 48 years of marriage, they regularly encountered racism in the US. My mom just for being Chinese, and my parents for being together and having mixed kids. 14/16

My mother defied her parents to go study at the American School in Rome in 1968. She met my dad while waiting in line to board the boat to get there on the docks of NYC. 13/16

My mom became a Latin teacher. Her siblings became a math professor, doctors, and a district attorney with a PhD in German philology. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 12/16

My mom grew up in SFO Chinatown. A magnet high school (Lowell) changed her life; she fell in love with Latin (Catullus :) ) and Classics. She and her siblings worked to support their parents and put themselves through UC Berkeley, at the time their commuter state school.11/16

But through all this my mother was never separated from her parents and never criminally imprisoned in inhumane conditions as we do to immigrants today in the US (please support @wrcomission) 10/16

Eventually my grandfather got a US visa for “intellectual Chinese.” They remained destitute, struggling to prosper for the rest of their lives, but they cherished safety and stability (which they never took for granted) and access to education (which they always focused on). 9/16

My grandmother fled to Macau with the youngest children and then to relatives of hers in Hong Kong who took them in. 8/16

My mother was about 3 when soldiers came at midnight and told my grandmother (my grandfather was exiled to Singapore at the time) that “Chairman Mao respects your family” so: leave now or you will all be killed in the morning. 7/16

Years earlier the Japanese had occupied their family compound, and now the communists came and took it and all their possessions. 6/16

But luckily for my mom and me (and my brother, and my son!) the traditional method did not work and my mom was born on the road on the walk back to Guangzhou. 5/16

When the Japanese invaded, my grandmother walked 1k km while pregnant with my mother, who was her 7th child. She tried to abort the pregnancy because war had broken out and she had to protect 6 other children while running from violence… 4/16

(a great aunt was a gun runner who smuggled rifles in her sedan chair for the 1911 revolution, but that’s a different and less documented story. My grandfather (surname Sun) is distantly related to Sun Yat-Sen, interesting, but also not special enough to save our bacon). 3/16

Not so special except her uncle, Hu Hanmin, became high up in the nationalist party during the Chinese civil war (). 2/16

I have complex feelings about the US and my privilege growing up there, but my mother’s immigration story to it is worth sharing. My grandmother was the daughter of a provincial tutor in Guangzhou. Her family were active in the 1911 revolution. 1/16
