2- the throw away "this isn't verified" was far outshadowed by the whole segment, plus talking head, that they had discussing the dangers of MRA and incel types. It was a cheap caveat. It was contingent ill-informed "news." They should have done better.

3- as a security scholar who also happens to have a Muslim background, I have noted with sadness and resignation, the judgements and assumptions that are made in this hot-take media climate when men who may have Muslim backgrounds commit crimes. All heresay becomes news fodder

4- My lament: the media doesn't wait for truth and factual information as much as they should. Correcting bad information after the fact doesn't erase the amplifying effect of that info and it discredits all subsequent reporting

5- it may have emerged today that the Facebook post is real and was deleted by Facebook as per their rules about mass murderers. But the CBC didn't know that yesterday. And now the people who would benefit from knowing the truth of this will wave it away as conjecture.

I just saw it confirmed by
@AndrayDomise, whose judgment and critical thinking I trust immensely. But disappointing that it was initially being run all over the place without confirmation.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

Both
@mattbraga and@JaneLytv had Facebook confirm the profile belonged to Minassian, and that the post was real. This was actually known yesterday, but FB hadn't yet confirmed it.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

How could it have been known yesterday if FB hadn't confirmed it/ if it was known than why did
@RosieBarton say that they were unable to verfiy it? I am just being a consistent stickler for fact-checking and responsible reporting at such a high level of news casting.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

A few journos were able to pinpoint the timestamp of the post (approx. 1 minute after the first 911 call) and others have reliable sources who confirmed it was authentic. But nothing was finalized until Facebook reps confirmed today.

So you're right, in that standards hadn't been met before reporting on the post. That was bad practice. All I'm saying is it wasn't reporters baselessly spreading a hoax.

That's comforting I suppose. What is shitty is that the alt-right nuts like Goldy et al have been shitposting all night about how CBC "fell" for a "4Chan Hoax." Could have been avoided if CBC had just *waited* for final confirmation. And the facts would still be true today.

I posted yesterday (during the Islamophobic info-jamming session)that yes, this guy came from the r/incel community. Her wehrmacht was all over it, immediately. TBH I don't think it much matters what they think.

I SO wish it didn't matter
I do think though, that in a climate of (bad) information overload, the caliber and quality of news reporting has never more important.0 replies 0 retweets 2 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
