The push to stop using queer as an umbrella term comes from TERFs. It’s part of their work to split trans people off from LGB folks. And it’s a clever one! I thought it was a decent argument myself for a while. But it’s insidious.

You don’t have to use “queer” to describe yourself. You can ask it not be used to describe you. But you don’t get to say what words other people use for themselves, or demand we stop using a word that’s been reclaimed as an academic and radical term for decades now

People like to claim you can't be funny without being offensive but my friend once looked at a packet of Tesco's chicken and said "60% chicken? I like those odds" and I'm still laughing sixteen years later.

I just remembered the time we went to a doors open thing at the cathedral in Kingston and the guide told us about the raccoon who would break in at night to wash his food in the holy water (they would find his footprints on the font every morning and eventually set up a camera)

Thread finally locked as it degenerated into a "whose generation is responsible for climate change huh?" drama, but not before someone told me that a teenager having a chronic illness constitutes a "piss poor" excuse for not standing for any adult.

I grew up surrounded my Norse culture and artifacts. I wanted to capture that sense of being around both the old and the modern, and also challenge the co-option of Norse mythology/symbolism by the far right. And have fun writing about gods.

A sleeping beauty retelling, that some fucker in my creative writing class informed me didn't work because there wasn't a good enough reason to make a character queer.

Brilliant piece by Lawrence Patchett on learning te reo Māori, and weaving the sense of ‘not knowing’ into his novel, The Burning River.

Feeling really glad I set my 2020 goal as "learn tarot" and not "learn how the fuck American politics work". Like, even from a country where a special biscuit tin is an integral part of democracy this shit seems weird.
