Not all kinds of trespassing are bad. But there are people who hold very confident opinions in fields where they lack expertise, and do not even see the relevance of local criticism. (I tend to dismiss people who summarily dismiss entire fields or groups as not knowing anything.)

In many ways the bad kind of trespassing is the intellectual Dunning-Kruger effect.pic.twitter.com/Sm0WTm9XnX

One interesting aspect is hybridizing questions, that are "addressed and answered by combining evidence and techniques from two or more fields". Here one either needs to trespass or work in interdisciplinary teams.pic.twitter.com/6WF85gdb8d

The paper mentions Schrödinger's 1944 "What is Life?" but doesn't mention that it is the quintessential brilliant trespass that actually hybridizes an entire field (by fruitfully showing how there is a non-trivial intersection with physics). A real heist!

As an overconfident academic jack-of-all-trades this paper stung me a bit, but it also shows how to actually do things right. Intellectual humility is important: let your impostor syndrome guide you towards finding ways of testing and improving your knowledge.

Interesting - but to some extent I wonder how much this overvalues domain knowledge, rather than properly engaging with reality, which doesn't respect disciplinary boundaries.

For instance, we see this failure in philosophers of mind ignorant of computational complexity theory, or virologists and vaccinologists ignorant of epidemiology, or as
@slatestarcodex recently lamented, the variety of domain experts ignorant of economic cost-benefit analysis.

Sorry I'd be epistemically trespassing on this one

Thank you for your smart thoughts on my work, Anders. I’m glad you found it useful—and good luck on your heists. (Sounds like fun!) In case you are interested, here’s a book I wrote on related themes:https://global.oup.com/academic/product/knowing-our-limits-9780190847289?cc=us&lang=en& …

Since I am writing a massive book about the limits of future supercivilizations your book sounds like it can come in very handy!
