Point is, we must be able to hold somebody responsible for hate speech, defamation etc.

Exactly. You embrace American values (constitution) and you are in. Here you are or are not and can't do anything about it.

That would be very frustrating to my mind; but it’s also why I’m thankful we can move around world much easier than 50 or 100 years ago

Keep in mind some of us are not like that. I met some Americans here that are my friends. They keep brining up how I "let them in". :)

In theory I am still there. I guess I only became soft and pragmatic with age and experience. I always enjoyed the international scene.

So it is. I stood up in college defending nazis right to free speech in a conference where I was invited by the Jewish association.
