Putin is, in my opinion, living in his bubble and believes other people share his rationale.

Russia is under permanent siege from NATO and other evil powers. Russia has never done any harm but only defend itself.
-
The Soviet man was sedated by propaganda and violence to the point of being totally servile. Andropov is the big hero.
-
After USSR breakup money has been added to the mix of ways to control people. Propaganda, violence and money.
-
Thus, when little propaganda, limited violence and small cash doesn't work it's not because of the method but amount.
-
If little doesn't work then big money, brainwashing propaganda and severe violence will work.
-
This belief has caused serious misjudgements from Putin. Maidan wasn't curbed by propaganda, cash or violence.
-
When Putin deployed snipers he was sure he would win but the opposite happened, he lost Ukraine. Biggest blunder to date.
-
Putin treats his surrounding with contempt and humiliates them when he can. Always let them wait, launder them in public.
-
Putin doesn't control Russia by giving direct orders to church, mafia, all branches of government. He is chief power broker.
-
Sure Putin can give orders but over time Russian society has learned what is approved and what is not.
-
When somebody is arrested, murdered, disappear, exiled, beaten up it is because they have stepped over limits or....
-
...their 'roof', their patron, has lost a power struggle where Putin weighed in to advantage of opponent.
-
Some argue Putin has no assets and this might be true as he has the power to get whatever he points at anyway.
-
Maybe some of the violence is not approved by Putin but executed as a gift to him as it is believed he would like it.
-
Putin would rather die than admit he lost control; might lead to actions Putin dislikes go unpunished so he can save face
-
Putin is KGB. He lives with it and like the mafia you never leave the KGB. KGB is all about control, no control is failure.
-
From a poor childhood in St. Petersburg thru KGB to the height of power Putin straight thru cynic and sinister.
-
For me, as a soft westerner, the sinister side of ex USSR has been very hard to take to heart.
-
The evil of the KGB is simply beyond my imagination which always catch me off guard to what they come up with.
-
So, how to deal with Putin? He only respects power. Hard cold power as manifested by servile subjects, cash or dead opponents
-
Anybody bending is a loser in Putin's mind and a free pass to more evil. Soft power has no effect.
-
Therefore, contain Russia or, when trying to strike a deal, act from a position of more power than Russia has.
-
Has Putin got any positive sides. No, not really. The economy grew because of oil and will sink because of Putin.
-
Is Putin a great strategist? No, but he is a master of playing a weak hand aggressively and to his advantage.
-
Putin is short and was probably small for his age as a boy. A tough childhood taught him to always strike first and hard.
-
Striking first and very hard, taking advantage of others weakness, having few and very low level beliefs. That's Putin.
-
Just some of my own ideas based on observations and reading about Putin.

Many maybe, could be, might be, I think etc should have been included but twitter is for short messages.
