As a species yes, but individuals who get too comfy with moving in inhabited areas must be eliminated. Delicate balance

We have almost no wolfs in Sweden and they suffer from inbreeding. No reason for hunting in my opinion. Insurance cover the sheep.
-
We are loosing hunting dogs at an alarming rate here.. Packs nail dogs from front gardes every now and then...
-
Front garden nailing is not good. Losing dogs that are roaming free in the forrest is another thing.
-
Yep, wolves in gardens starts to be dangerous to children. Those that stay in the woods are welcome, those that don't die..
-
In Finland authorities check each case individually before giving a kill permit.

I have seen large herds of deer in Sweden. I guess it is not lack of food that keeps wolf population low.
-
Exactly. But the deers are reserved for hunters you see. That's the real reason they go after the wolf but they dare not say it

Shocking and sad that country such as Sweden is culling wolves in this day and age.
-
There is an unfortunate tradition here. Sweden's hunters lobby make the NRA in the US look like weaklings.

But I really can't tell about small animals like rabbit population that is also vital for wolf herd survival.
-
Sweden has enough wildlife to feed the wolfs. It is all about humans lust for hunting.

Also forests large enough for herd to feed in. If there are many man made obstacles then that too is bad for wild life.

Wolves are not dangerous to humans - there are very few instances of attacks except in self-defence or through rabies.
