NATO is a collective organisation - there is already a common defence. Hard to see how building another would help.

There is a difference. All EU members are not part of NATO and with a common EU defence EU would take the lead, not the US.

So why not leave NATO as it is? US has every incentive to remain in the organisation. Only time Article 5 invoked was 9/11.
