@tggleeson But the Irish have been underdogs for 100s of years and are spread out all over. Huge mentality difference.

@andersostlund Yes, but nothing to do with language, speaking a world-used language like English can actually help understand others. -
@tggleeson Of course. There is no arguing about that. But please try to get a job in Sweden without speaking Swedish. -
@andersostlund Indeed, but you could get a job in London or Dublin without English, as thousands of East Europeans have proven. -
@tggleeson In banking, consultancies, big corporations? Probably the East Europeans speak enough English to get by though. -
@andersostlund Obviously not banking, talking classic entry-level emigrant jobs. Point is being English-only doesn't make for inward looking -
@tggleeson Not as a mentality surely but it makes it much harder to follow international news. Try to follow anything from Sweden. -
@andersostlund But even if UK had high level language skills how many would learn Swedish or Finnish?, French, Spanish, German maybe. -
@tggleeson Swedish if of course low-ranked, Finnish impossible to learn. But to have a few languages in common would help. - 7 more replies
