@andersostlund They are a powerful Mil. force. Not to be underestimated. They can match US force in most ways.

@MeanGene2020 They can? How many air craft carriers does Russia have? How many commanders with real experience? How big a budget? -
@andersostlund One aircraft carrier. Armor, air power, force (troops), drones, spec ops units, artillery. Not an easy target by any means. -
@MeanGene2020 If perceived as a target. Why not just contain it? Would not be all that hard.

@andersostlund But would they risk of mutually assured destruction? Or do they think local, single blast would not cause response? -
@zeziberto Putin's career in the KGB stalled because he "lacked a real sense of fear" according to superiors. -
@andersostlund You think people around are not like him and has some sense of fear for MAD? If that would be the case, coup may be expected? -
@zeziberto A coup is a real possibility but I fear Putin's inner circle could consist mostly of people worse than him.

@andersostlund may be mistake to overestimate strength but also to underestimate threat. nukes aren't what neighbours are most worried about -
@gvidope What are neighbours most worried about? -
@andersostlund regime and people. I don't think they'll nuke 200km from their border but to turn everyone's life to disaster -their pleasure -
@gvidope But the nukes is one of the chief reasons NATO will not support the neighbours so the two are connected.

@andersostlund Problem is, even with outdated weapons, tactics & badly trained troops Russia can cause a lot of devastation. -
@MikkoLaaksonen1 That is a the core of the problem. Russia has the power to destroy.

The far greater danger
@andersostlund@DJGalbreath is to not be aware of actual advances in Rus mil capbilities during past 4-5 yrs. -
@charlyjsp agree. See my@SputnikInt RT that followed -
@DJGalbreath@charlyjsp@SputnikInt As far as I have seen the West appears to be surprised about what is going on in Russia. Big blunder.

@andersostlund Well, that's quite relative. Maybe can't really harm the USA, but in the Baltic countries it's totally another matter. -
@andersostlund That's why it's so important to build up NATO's rapid response capacity. Active deterrance must be _immediate_. -
@andrisinaforest Exactly. NATO has kept its guard down for too many years now.
