Maybe “civic engagement day” in the title would have been more accurate but an editorial decision was made that many people wouldn’t understand what that term meant so we chose to use an example of one thing students could do on their day off. Also, protest inspired policy.

Imagine how people might react if the title read “for philanthropy” instead of “to protest”- I understand that editorial decisions are made for a variety of reasons, but obviously the word protest is politically charged & somewhat divisive. No criticism, just another perspective.

Read some history. The most effective, and genuine protests, were those who came with consequences. The consequences may have been unpleasant, but were readily accepted. I’ll give a student protest some cred, when subsequent discipline is accepted, and not contested.

I have two thoughts, so many times the SB or group like JPEF or City Hall meet during school times when teachers and students can't attend, seemingly by design, it would be nice to have the option to go.

Next attendance long ago stopped meaning anything, you miss a day for a doctors appointment or to go to the beach it doesn't matter any more. If a kid wants to protest 1 time or 10 nobody is going to say anything. Where not opposed to the idea I am just not sold it is necessary.

Should students be allowed a day off from school to participate in protests?
