THREAD on May 1st: In US-Taliban Doha deal, today was date all foreign troops were meant to have departed Afghanistan. Since January, Taliban warned they would strike US forces, but have waffled in their responses to the 14 April US announcement of unconditional withdrawal. /1

Taliban reacted more negatively to news of withdrawal than some anticipated. Revealed massive mistrust: many in movement didn't believe it. And yes, US exit is one of their primary objectives, but extended timeline was seen as rejection of Doha deal. /2https://www.crisisgroup.org/asia/south-asia/afghanistan/how-us-withdrawal-decision-will-affect-afghan-conflict …

Today, Taliban fired rockets at Kandahar airfield, US airstrikes responded. But was hardly a massive assault on foreign forces. More muted than many expected. Meanwhile, yesterday in Logar dozens killed, over 100 wounded by car bomb. Unclaimed but almost certainly Taliban. /3

What do week's events tell us, other than that, as always, greatest victims of this war are Afghan? How to weed out the rhetoric, threats & posturing? Honestly, it's still early to say. 1) Taliban could simply be taking time to launch a coordinated series of attacks on US. /4

...2) Diplomats tell @CrisisGroup a concerted campaign to pressure Pakistan has led to efforts to press Taliban back into talks. It is a particularly worrying moment for Islamabad; chief interest is avoiding displacement crisis/ border spillover from expanded civil war. /5

      3) Taliban also receiving direct messaging from US, Western & regional states: "if you choose battlefield path, even total victory results in certain pariah status." Unclear of Russia, China & Iran's commitment, but Moscow statement was surprisingly firm.https://www.state.gov/joint-statement-on-extended-troika-on-peaceful-settlement-in-afghanistan/ …

Diplomatic pressure + reports of internal deliberation mean Taliban may be keeping options open for returning to talks, or at least preserving bare minimum of relations with US. That could result in lower use of certain tactics, though Logar bombing reveals a lot. /7

What does all this mean in terms of May 1st, a "spring offensive"? -Will Taliban mass-assault Afghan cities before final withdrawal of troops? -Or will they carry out violence yet hold on this point, like last year? /8 (see @AANafgh for conflict trends) https://www.afghanistan-analysts.org/en/reports/as-us-troops-withdraw-what-next-for-war-and-peace-in-afghanistan/ …

Signs thus far point to Ghazni as the only urban centre attracting intensified levels of offensive activity, yet Taliban is quite active on major highways across country this week, and continues to hammer districts in Kandahar, Zabul and elsewhere. /9https://tolonews.com/afghanistan-171834 …

Above evidence insufficient to conclude what year's "fighting season" might look like, at least until foreign troop withdrawal is complete. Notable that several possibilities seem possible, given Taliban rhetoric early this year. Civilian harm is/will remain grossly high. /END

Pakistan has suffered more than any other country for siding with US/ NATO for their war against Russia & Afghanistan Will suffer more, they are blaming Pakistan for their ill fated end in Afghanistan n want Pakistan to do what they failed to do. What an injustice to country.

I think we are heading toward a bloody year; but the level of violence will gradually increase until september. If peace talks doesn't start in Turkey, I think Octobar and probably November(subject to weather condition) will be the deadly months in the country.

Peace talks in Turkey is very important; reportedly, Taliban will offer three to six months ceasefire in exchange of reciving certain benefits such as removing their leaders' name from UN list...Without a an agreement, Taliban will try to challange the government in battle field.
