Instead of New Year resolutions, I'm making gradual changes to my life--a new habit here, a new habit there.

It's not easy: I still want my caffeine intake, but I don't care for coffee or tea. I also still drink milk--but no longer chocolate milk (possibly my favorite beverage).

This week I'm cutting obvious sugars (and artificial sweeteners) out of my life: sweets, sodas, sugar in my coffee, etc. I'll still have the occasional protein bar, and I still eat starches (until I learn how to cook, which is another current project), but this is a start.

I've decided not to learn Mandarin Chinese so that I have more time to take Japanese and Korean to high proficiency. I hope to be a multilingual tour guide one day and Mandarin would be my most useful language, but I never developed a love for it and I still struggle with it.

This video has the best list of reasons for learning Mandarin Chinese. However, most of this also applies to Korean and Japanese--at least for me.

Occasionally you might see an article saying that the key to success is not motivation but habits. This claim confuses motivation with willpower. Certainly, habits and not willpower is the key. Motivation simply refers to your desire: Without it, why would you start a new habit?

How do you merge? When you see a lane reduction ahead do you switch lanes immediately? Or do you wait until the very end and "zip" over. You might think the procrastinator is a jerk, but says that driver is doing it right.

You don’t need to be a “native speaker” (whatever that means) of a language. You just need to come up with a version of the language that suits your needs. “Native/non-native” is a false binary that needs to be collapsed. Create a “third language” in between that works for *you*.

In the beginning I often felt I was "faking" my Korean, even though I could speak it. You might feel "imposter syndrome" with foreign languages from time to time. This is a normal feeling. If you're studying then you're improving, whether your brain thinks so or not. Keep going.

Japanese can be a bit confusing. For example, How long have you been in Japan means Your Japanese is quite good which means The weather is rather nice which means Very pleased to meet you which actually means Can you teach me English

A mistake FR learners often make is use the word "heureux" as a direct translation of "happy" in English. It's not. "Heureux" is when you're beaming with joy, or experiencing quite extreme joy. So if in an everyday situation you say "Je suis heureux de t'aider", it sounds weird!

10 yo: They only made Star Wars to make money. 7 yo: If nobody did anything to make money, we'd still be cavemen. You wouldn't have your Xbox. We'd just be a bunch of guys throwing spears at deers.

You can't "think yourself" out of being nervous. The only way to become more confident with something is to do it until it feels normal 💃

People are way, WAY more scared of the risk of a 25% drop in the stock market... ...than losing small amounts every day due to inflation, fees, & poor asset allocation, which add up to far more over a lifetime This is one of the most costly mistakes in life

My long-term goal is to take free university classes (MOOCs) in French, some of which are offered by Canadian universities like Laval.

I also created this YouTube playlist to start with. Most of these are popular YT channels. I understand very little so far, but I'm sure it mostly takes practice.
