You're turning 16 soon! So you memorize the manual. Parents work several jobs; you're on your own to pay for behind the wheel. You wait endlessly at the DMV, pay again, and after proving yourself in writing and in practice -- the government gives you a license!
This was years ago. Decades, actually. You take your license for granted. Your life requires driving. To work. To shuttle kids. To carry more than 5 items from the store that's an hour away on foot. You never think about anything happening to your license. It's yours.
Then, someone comes into power and says your license becomes invalid in 6 months. No warning, no explanation. He says he'll leave it up to a bunch of other people, not you, to decide whether you ought to have your license again.
You rail. This is madness. You have done nothing. You followed the steps, filled out the forms, paid your fees, renewed when your license came due. Your livelihood is now in jeopardy - the job you can't reach, the school you can't get your kids to in time.
