@cruickshank not sure portugal counts as ex-empire. i was thinking Rome or Athens or Istanbul. (not w/o their issues, granted.)

@anatosaurus the Portuguese empire was a thing! Sure, it peaked centuries ago, but still. They even had their own colonial wars in the 1960s -
