Repeating the lie only spreads it. We need to flood the channels with truth and reality.

So how do you debunk a lie or myth without saying what you are debunking?

Mostly you don’t. You starve it of oxygen and minimize its impact. But conspiracy mongers are gonna conspiracy monger. Our goal is reach the larger majority of people who aren’t lost.

When myths or lies go unchecked there are plenty of ways for them to spread.

@anatosaurus work. We have experience in the post Nov 3rd timeframe that indicates we beat disinfo by amplifying objective reality, not spending time arguing with conspiracy theorists.1 réponse 0 Retweet 0 j'aime -
Super valid and vital q. You use what others have called “truth sandwich:” truth- *purpose of the lie, why they say it* - truth. (It should more accurately be called lie sandwich cause that’s the filling but...)

Eg Covid is deadly disease. A handful of politicians spread lies to distract from their failures to protect and prevent it while they handed billions to donors and refused to ensure we can make ends meet. To contain pandemic we must mask up & get relief & distro vaccines.

+++ ascribe the motivation for the lie, instead of debunking/repeating.

So now you're okay with restating the lie after all?

See Anat’s example. Nowhere is the lie restated.

What NOT to do, aka restating lie would be - "can you believe XYZ is claiming COVID is fake" OR "XYZ keeps repeating that vaccines are dangerous" - or myth busting (e.g. top ten myths about vaccines...) In testing, people recall claim but not if it was true or false.
